According to a recent study in Environmental Science: Processes and Impacts, the prevalence of PFAS is more widespread than previously thought. The article, An Overview of the Uses Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, is considered the best inventory of PFAS-usage to-date, with findings of more than 200 uses across 64 industrial areas. From coating musical instruments to brake fluid to glass, this year’s surge in acknowledging the persistence and negative impacts of PFAS also comes with a better understanding of where and how the category of these water-resistant, non-stick/stain chemicals are used. Luckily, green innovation across industries is urgently trying to find healthier replacements. Evolved By Nature is happy to be one of these agents of change. As discussed in Vogue Business, we’re on a mission to replace PFAS in leather with our Activated Silk technology.

Despite most sustainable start-ups not aspiring to become global brands, instead focusing their energy on solving the world's most significant issues, their efforts to scale circularity are, in fact, possible. It just requires patience and a continual rethinking of the industry-wide fundamentals. It requires breaking bad industry habits in order to find regenerative solutions that serve our health and the health of the planet. According to the Circular Fashion Report 2020, a collaborative research platform initiated by lablaco, the anticipated market value for circular solutions in the fashion industry is estimated to become as much as $5.3 trillion. Evident to the new surge in large brands investing in sustainability start-ups such as ours, building resilience and circularity across the supply chain is becoming more of a reality. Although 2020 has been a challenging year, the progression in investment and discussion to promote a more circular economy in our post-pandemic business models has shown promise.

Human and environmental health are inextricably linked. If a synthetic chemical is toxic for waterways, soil, and other natural resources, chances are, the toxicity will negatively impact our health. As we propel toward a scenario of higher global temperatures, larger amounts of plastic and chemical pollution, and widespread natural habitat destruction, we also begin to realize how these externalities are more often than not shared between the natural environment and public health.Select scientists, policymakers and innovators call for a breakdown of silos between environment and public health when addressing widespread environmental issues. In preparation for a new era of ecological emergencies, we must recognize the interdependence between humanity and nature: identifying, investing, and scaling solutions that serve both without compromising the planetary boundaries from which we thrive inside.
