As one global crisis begins to end, we face others. This Earth Month is still positioned in light of the pandemic, and lessons are surfacing as researchers continue to make strong connections between pandemics and the overall degradation of our natural environment. So what lessons did we learn in 2020 that we can apply to other earthly issues? The common threads identified center around the need to make invisible risks visible and turn the focus on the worst-case scenario into tangible and timely future-proof solutions. Experts have the technical understanding to depict evolving problems and provide suggested solutions (ex. our expertise of industry-wide hidden, harmful chemicals). But how do we make the complexity of our situation clear and actionable for everyone? This Earth Month focuses on lessons learned from 2020, accessible tips for sustainable living, and how to put environmental understanding front and center.

Environmental literacy is needed as the economy and our society's policies become more concerned about the state of our natural world. Education can create a community of citizens prepared to incorporate sustainability in all sectors, establishing a more equitable society and stimulating a greener economy. However, achieving a high standard of environmental literacy comes with keeping up with ever-evolving scientific breakthroughs. And that requires continual learning of scientific concepts and jargon. While being up-to-date can create information overload, the real problem is the perpetuation of misunderstanding when the science communication isn't clear. Researchers have recently found that papers containing higher counts of jargon were cited less frequently by other researchers. This breakthrough shows that when communicating science, authors must take the complexity and simplify it for the sake of both scientists and the public. Clearer communication from the experts in the room, alongside publicized environmental literacy, could be the happy medium we need to solve environmental issues effectively.

Currently, thousands of harmful chemicals are used to create apparel. This is an invisible problem that's negatively impacting the health of people and the planet — which is why we partnered with Gentrue, a high-end collection of sustainable activewear that is Evolved By Nature's first apparel brand to incorporate Activated Silk™ Technology. We deliver high-performing activewear while eliminating the need for toxic finishing chemicals. By using Activated Silk™, Gentrue's products have improved sweat-wicking performance up to 71% and fast absorption and drying by 38.5%, compared to other Nylon-based activewear on the market. This seemingly small change can make a significant impact by addressing the incredibly big problem of hidden toxic chemicals within the apparel industry.

With the rise in hand sanitizers containing questionable ingredients (most recently, benzene), we are dedicated to protecting human health without compromising ingredients in hygiene products that keep us safe. Through our hand hygiene line, we’ve replaced the need for toxic preservatives, petroleum-based thickeners, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals with our non-toxic Activated Silk™ Technology to provide a protective barrier for skin and deliver hydration. This Is Hand Sanitizer is available for purchase for the general public and businesses on our website. Additionally, under our Helping Hands program, we’re donating profits from hand sanitizer sales to organizations in need. So far, we’ve been able to donate more than 4,500 bottles to 155+ organizations, including hospitals, community organizations, health centers, food pantries, and more.
