Personal Care, Textiles

Evolved By Nature Newsletter

July 20, 2020

We create healthier chemistry between people, the things they love, and the planet. We also create this bi-weekly newsletter — curated with interesting and inspiring stories relevant to anyone interested in making our industries and our economies more bioharmonious.

And why is ethical, sustainable fashion so expensive? The answer unveils a complicated truth: that the textile industry depends on a fast-paced, resource-intensive economic model. The cycle allows unsustainable textiles to be more accessible to a broader audience. As new clothes continually drop, so do the costs – and so do wages for workers who make those garments. As COVID-19's economic impact festers, long standing issues like workers' rights malpractice and health hazards are once again at the forefront of the conversation about fast fashion. These externalities are the invisible costs of clothing. Fortunately, the industry is now grappling with this more than ever. Setting the right price requires fair treatment of garment workers as central in sustainable solutions. Green chemistry is not only for buyers of fashion, but also for the safety of people who make the products we love.

From oil and gas companies writing off billions of assets, to cancellations of the Keystone XL, Dakota Access, and Atlantic pipelines, the future of the fossil fuel industry is uncertain. Naturally, this was a moment to rejoice a step toward planetary protection. But the fight isn’t over yet, especially as environmental rollbacks continue. A balancing act of transitioning from a fossil fuel-based economy to one that centers around renewables is just beginning. Pressure needs to come from all industries reliant on petrochemicals, by rethinking their relationship with the environment and investing in biocompatible solutions across the supply chain. Silo thinking will not be conducive to change. As the collapse of pipelines becomes a momentous occasion for economic transition, planetary protection must be at the root of transformation.

Our new FDA-regulated Gel Hand Sanitizer is now available for sale for personal and corporate use. We’ve eliminated the need for toxic preservatives, petroleum-based thickeners and endocrine-disrupting chemicals, resulting in a non-toxic hand sanitizer made with only four ingredients – including 70% alcohol and Activated Silk. Not only is it safe for waterways when washed down the drain, it is effective in providing a protective barrier for skin to deliver hydration. With our Helping Hands program, 100% of the profits from hand sanitizer sales go toward helping those in need. So far, we’ve been able to donate more than 2,400 bottles to 100+ organizations, including hospitals, community organizations, health centers, food pantries and more.
