"Environmental insults" is a term used to describe conditions in the environment that harm our health. These "insults" include water, air, and soil pollution — not to mention toxic substances found in our homes. Researchers associated with Columbia University recently outlined the eight hallmarks of environmental insults by chemical pollutants that can impede human health — ranging from oxidative stress and inflammation, to impaired nervous system function, to genomic alterations and mutations. These findings couldn't come at a more appropriate time, as discussions of hidden chemical toxicants are becoming more mainstream thanks to environmental and reproductive epidemiologist Shanna H Swan's book, "Count Down." Her chronicling of rising human infertility from everyday chemicals such as BPA and phthalates (and many more) has rung a set of alarm bells as the new existential threat the human race will have to face. Along with the massive amounts of press, scientists and journalists are offering tips for people looking to avoid the toxic chemicals commonly found in the human environment.

Our environmental crises stem from a collision of two seemingly incompatible systems: Earth’s natural ecosystem and humanity’s economic global network. Environmental calamities also include not just deforestation or plastic pollution but an increase in the occurrence of pandemics. One result from the 2020 shut-down? Our dire need to address social inequities and the unsustainable way humans extract the planet’s natural resources has gone mainstream. With this culture shift comes expectations to do good, ethically, and environmentally. Balancing this aspiration with the realities of our present-day economic model is no easy feat. But it must be done. With the climate crisis looming, a switch from “doing less bad” to true circularity is crucial in order to ensure a healthy future. This critical shift can be accomplished, especially as experts are offering actionable recommendations to maximize the circular economy's impact.

Currently, thousands of harmful chemicals are used to create apparel – an invisible problem that's negatively impacting the health of people and the planet. This is why we partnered with Gentrue, a high-end collection of sustainable activewear that is Evolved By Nature's first apparel brand to incorporate Activated Silk™ Technology. Through our collaboration, we deliver high-performing activewear while eliminating the need for toxic finishing chemicals. By using Activated Silk™, Gentrue's products have improved sweat-wicking performance up to 71% and fast absorption and drying by 38.5%, compared to other Nylon-based activewear on the market. This seemingly small change can make a significant impact by addressing the incredibly big problem of hidden toxic chemicals within the apparel industry. Gentrue apparel is available for pre-order at gentrue.com. This helps ensure apparel is made to meet demand, avoiding overproduction and keeping things like leggings out of landfills.
