Evolved By Nature Newsletter

April 27, 2020

We create healthier chemistry between people, the things they love, and the planet. We also create this bi-weekly newsletter — curated with interesting and inspiring stories relevant to anyone interested in making our industries and our economies more bioharmonious.

We observed Earth Day last week, which marked 50 years of demonstrating support for environmental protection and the natural systems of which we depend. Many attended online events to celebrate our planet but also to reflect and even repent humanity’s detrimental impact on nature. Across decades, the scientific community has made incredible findings that help us better understand the world and our relationship with it. This year, we must recognize what systems and processes have not been working while being the positive force that advocates for resilience. Nature is telling us time is running out. It will test our societal systems. The good news is that humanity can harness the power of changing the world for the better.

Sustainability has been a hot topic in the world of fashion for the past few months. Researchers, activists, and consumers have been asking the industry to adopt a system that minimizes and mitigates detrimental environmental impacts. COVID-19 seems to be no threat to the sustainability conversation, as enterprises are forced to find and adapt to a new normal. As social and environmental problems within the fashion industry are revealed left and right, circularity is becoming central to the discussion. Digital content on the topics of material science, green chemistry, and overall sustainability is continuously produced. It seems COVID’s stop on time is a window of opportunity for industries to invest in ideas rooted in sustainability and social responsibility.

She talks about how our green chemistry company was started, the possibilities we've discovered in silk molecules, and life in our current moment. Building a sustainable future means working with e Building a sustainable future means working with ecosystems — not against them — to meet our needs in a way that’s genuinely nature-positive.

It’s not easy. In fact, it runs counter to how most things are generally done. But it’s entirely possible. Especially if you love all of the amazing complexities that exist within nature.

We certainly do. We look deep inside natural, renewably sourced silk protein to find a vast array of incredibly powerful peptides. Nature has already done the hard work — we simply unlock it, using these peptides to help brands create products that are both more natural and more effective.

Our ingredients are designed to replace petrochemicals, silicones, and other questionable synthetics, transforming how industries like fashion and skincare interact with people and the planet.

Our entire deal is based on nature’s complexity, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Spring is the perfect time to declutter your space Spring is the perfect time to declutter your space.

As you clean up, keep an eye out for common culprits like SLS, PEGs, petrolatum, dimethicone, and phthalates. These ingredients often show up in soaps, cleansers, lotions, and everyday household products.

Over time, harmful chemicals can build up in our bodies — a process known as body burden or bioaccumulation. Even small exposures from personal care, cleaning supplies, and household materials can add up.

And it’s not just our bodies. These chemicals can accumulate in ecosystems too, washing down the drain and into our environment.

That’s why we created Activated Silk™ biotechnology to clean up the chemistry around us.

Activated Silk™ ingredients are made from biodegradable and biocompatible silk protein.

They’re designed to replace traditional, toxic chemicals in skincare and personal care products — and outperform them.

We’re helping brands detox their formulas.

Because sometimes, tidying up starts at the ingredient level.

Step into the room hair first. Lots of hair care Step into the room hair first.

Lots of hair care products are packed with synthetic polymers, high-VOC aerosols, and microplastics that weigh your hair down.

We’re changing that by replacing harsh chemicals with natural, high-performing ingredients that work with your hair, not against it.

Many synthetic ingredients don’t meet the qualif Many synthetic ingredients don’t meet the qualifications to claim sustainability.

So instead, they’ll be marketed as “naturally-derived,” “vegan,” or “clean.”

That might sound good at first glance.

But not all “naturally-derived” materials are sourced in renewable ways.

Not all “vegan” products are sustainable or even cruelty-free.

And not all “clean” materials are good for the health of people or planet.

We encourage you to look for brands that can back up their claims and don’t use vague marketing terms.

And in the meantime, we’re more than happy to share why we support a “sustainable” claim on all of our Activated Silk™ peptides:

-They’re biodegradable.
-They’re made from upcycled materials.
-They’re made with renewable resources.
-They’re not formulated with petrochemicals.
-They’re supportive of a circular economy.
-They support 14 out of 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.

If skincare products irritate your skin, it might If skincare products irritate your skin, it might be because your barrier is compromised, causing harsh ingredients to penetrate too deeply.

You should meet Activated Silk™ 33B. It’s a gentle, naturally derived peptide that’s designed to support your skin barrier.

It helps by supporting the natural production of claudin, a vital skin health protein, to lock in moisture and lock out inflammation instigators.

Skincare just got a lot less irritating with Activated Silk™ 33B.

‘Vegan leather’ sounds better than ‘pleather ‘Vegan leather’ sounds better than ‘pleather.’ But that’s exactly what vegan leather is — plastic leather. And creating plastic leather is obviously not great for the environment.

Real leather is a biodegradable material that’s been around for thousands of years. It’s a byproduct that comes completely from the food industry — no cow has ever been killed for its hide alone. And these hides would otherwise go to waste, if not turned into leather.

So instead of propping up pleather/vegan leather production, which is resource intensive and unsustainable, maybe let’s use something that’s upcycled and natural?
