Evolved By Nature, a life sciences company pioneering natural peptide discovery, today announced its exclusive chemistry partnership with Authentic Thai Leather (ATL), a newly launched coalition of tanneries making high-quality, high-performance leather more sustainable and accessible worldwide. Authentic Thai Leather consists of six founding tanneries based in Bangkok, Thailand, including Chun Wang Brothers Co., Kongsiri Tannery, Limsilp Tannery Co., Thai Tanning Co., SF Leather, and Vaikijanek.
Through this partnership, ATL will exclusively finish all of its leather with Evolved By Nature’s biodegradable, carbon-reductive biofinishing system—Activated Silk™ L1—which consists of a topcoat, basecoat, and auxiliaries. Activated Silk™ L1 can enhance leather performance by every measure, including colorfast durability, flex durability, water resistance, stain resistance, and breathability, while eliminating the use of PFAS (known as “forever chemicals”) and added cross-linkers, and reducing fossil fuel-derived inputs, such as polyurethane.
By switching to Activated Silk™ L1, ATL tanneries are reducing their energy usage and CO₂ emissions while providing a safer and healthier environment for tannery workers. Historically, tannery workers have been exposed to a wide range of chemicals conventionally used to finish leather. Many of these chemicals—such as PFAS—are known carcinogens, and research shows tannery workers have increased risks for a number of cancers. ATL understands that best-in-class leather can be produced without risking the health of workers, which is why the coalition has chosen to exclusively use Activated Silk™ L1, a non-carcinogenic biofinishing system.
ATL is committed to sustainability and can provide the international leather market with semi-finished or finished articles developed from upgraded raw materials. The coalition offers a new supply chain solution that can provide the leather market with high-quality, high-volume leather at a cost effective price that outperforms traditional sources.
