Everybody knows collagen.

Collagen is a scaffolding protein produced in skin cells to give our skin its firmness and elasticity. These are the elements that give us the appearance of youthful, energetic skin. Due to internal and external factors, we all experience less collagen production over time – leading to wrinkles and fine lines.

But did you know maintaining that youthful appearance is actually a two‑part system?

Collagen Production

Collagen production occurs mainly in the cells called fibroblasts. These fibroblasts produce many types of collagen, Type 1 being the most abundant — approximately 90% of the collagen in the dermis is Type 1. The more Type 1 collagen you produce, the healthier and stronger your skin matrix will be.

Collagen Stabilization

As we age, there is a natural upregulation of enzymes called collagenases. These enzymes degrade collagen fibers, resulting in collagen fragmentation that compromises the structural integrity of the skin matrix. Reducing the production of collagenase can help to maintain a strong, healthy skin matrix.

Retinol, widely regarded as the gold standard of anti-aging components, doesn’t actually enhance the collagen matrix. Instead, it acts as a collagen stabilizer. It helps maintain the collagen matrix by lowering the levels of collagenase enzymes in the body, which are known to attack and degrade existing collagen fibers.
